Yes the battery cover at the bottom is tin.  It is called wood graining to make it look like walnut. This is done by hand with sponges, feathers and wool along with a foam brush and several layers of different colour glazing stains.

Before:: a few pounds of rust, a little red paint and something green growing on all the brass and nickel
