Sidey Angus Farm Diary - August 1998

August 1st-8th - County Fair
Had a very good time at our Auglaize County Fair this year. It rained most of the week but the temperatures were cool and very pleasant. We had 8 head on the string this year which was down from our typical 12-14. I think that was a major part of making it more enjoyable this year. Beef breeding numbers were up this year with several new herds exhibiting and filling our barn up very well.

I had a very good week in the show ring. We had the Grand Champion Angus female with our Tag #340 VDAR New Trend 315 Senior yearling, Reserve Grand Champion Angus female with her younger maternal sister Tag #360 by Finks 5522-6148 and Grand Champion Angus Bull with our January 1998 Tag #498  son of GAR Precision 1680. He was also Reserve Supreme champion bull in the all breed division.

My niece had the the Champion Angus heifer and also Reserve Supreme Champion female over all breeds in the 4-H show as well with her first year heifer project, a September 1997 daughter of Summitcrest Scotch Cap 0B45. She was tickled to near to death and I never expected it at all. I think I was in 4-H for about 3-4 years before I won a trophy and then it didn't happen again for another 6 years. At least not in cattle. Tom Lindsey was judge for our breeding cattle this year and also judged the Ohio State Fair Steer show at Columbus on the 9th.

August 25th - storms
Delivered a bull to Bucyrus yesterday afternoon and had an enjoyable tip over and seeing the farms along the way. The trip home was not as enjoyable. As I approached the town of Upper Sandusky I saw what appeared to be a black wall ahead of me on the highway. The storm front was almost a total black sheet of wind and rain. I met that wall head on right at the intersection of US 30 and US 23 and it dropped my truck speed 8 MPH instantly. I thought the airbag would go off. The wind and rain made me feel I was in a tornado and it was interesting trying to keep the trailer from running sideways down the highway to say the least. Luckily the worst was very brief and I was able to make it home with few problems at all.

Went to the Allen county Fair  this afternoon to make sure everything was in good shape for the West Central Ohio District Angus Show on Friday. I think that it will be a very nice show. We have 40 head entered and the people at Lima have been very good to work with. I talked a good while with several of the breeders there who I have not seen in quite a while and it was an enjoyable visit. Typical for fairs in Ohio, it rained while I was there *grin*
