Sidey Angus Farm Diary - June 2000

June 8 - gorgeous & making hay
Two gorgeous days here! It is 80º F  ( 26.6º C) this morning and to get even warmer throughout the day with temperatures in the mid 90ºs F  ( 34º C) expected the rest of the week. We do have  really nice breezes so it feels super.

Yesterday I moved the herd to the Eastern section of the North rotational pasture. round balerThe clovers are in bloom there and the grass is super thick. The bottom pasture here at the main farm is ready to take the cattle already so it will be in great shape by the time the cows knock the grass down in the current rotation. Dad & I peeled down my nieces show cow yesterday afternoon as well. She is a super nice two year old Summitcrest Scotch Cap OB45 and really impressed me with her milk this year. I will start round baling the first field of red clover this afternoon and then we intend to start the hay in earnest tomorrow with both square and round balers. There are 50 acres down and curing perfectly.

June 5 - COLD!   Featured profile article
We more rain the past two days .9 inches ( 2.29 cm) in addition to last weeks total. When I woke this morning it was 47º F  ( 8º C) actual with high winds giving us a chill factor of 35º F  ( 1.7º C). The temperatures are really swinging.from 88º F  ( 31º C) on both Friday and Saturday.

We did finish applying 28% liquid nitrogen side dress fertilizer to the corn on Friday and then completed our post herbicide applications to the corn on Saturday. We tried two programs this year. One was a 1/2 rate of Harness pre-plant then follow up with Basis Gold, Hornet and Crop oil  and the other was a pre-plant of Axiom followed by Hornet and crop oil. The corn is coming gangbusters. With a dry and breezy forecast with low humidity for the week ahead, Dad is beginning to mow the red clover today. It looks like there will be a great yield on this first cutting. I received word that the farm is featured in a profile article on the cattle oriented www.cattleinfonet.com site. This is a great information web site and I recommend it be bookmarked as a reference site. to see the article click news on the main page and see the main articles section.
