Sidey Angus Farm Diary - March 1998

March 01 - Super day
Yesterday really felt like Spring was here. Sunny and warm, almost shirt sleeve weather. Almost made you feel like it was time to get the corn planter ready.

I sorted out three cow/calf pairs to start watching as a selection of a pair to exhibit at the Ohio Preview in June. Two of our best Tonto daughters have really nice bull calves, one by GAR Precision and the other by New Trend 315. My "315" Queenmar daughter is also looking good with her Sleep Easy heifer.

I started working more with my Sept. Finks 5522-6148 heifer getting her ready as well. I speak at one last meeting for COBA/Select Sires tomorrow at Salem, Ohio. Salem is about an hour East of Akron. it will make for a long day.

March 04 - Colder
After having a beautiful day on Saturday and a decent one Sunday, Winter is starting to come back a bit. It was colder yesterday and even more so today. About 38° F (3° C) right now with very light snow. Eastern Ohio received snow last night but we have been lucky and the ground is too warm for what little we are getting to stick.

We have seven DHD Traveler 6807 daughters in the calving pens right now. All are bred to N Bar Emulation EXT so there is no worry about calving ease. I saw a really nice Woodhill Supreme heifer on Monday afternoon at a friends. I've seen others by him that I also like but this calf really caught my eye. I probably will have to consider that bull a bit more.

Had a really nice crowd at the meeting at Salem, Monday evening. It was held in conjunction with the Mahoning & Columbiana County Cattlemen's Banquet meeting. I think that I was well received and got to meet a lot of nice people up that way. Salem is about 225 miles (362 Km) from here but it wasn't too bad a trip at all.

March 18 - Erratic Weather
This has certainly has been an interesting month around here weather wise. These have been weeks where the temperatures have swung 50° F  in variation in just a matter of days. It is warm and raining heavily today.

We had some very nice EXT  bull calves out of the 6807 daughters these past several weeks. I would have thought that we would have got one heifer from the bunch but it was not to be. The bulls are sure nice though and will be excellent herd sire prospects next Spring.  We also have a good one by 315 and that is the sire who we will rebreed most of them back to for next year.

I am going to go to the Ohio Beef Expo this weekend in Columbus. I had had thoughts about not going but decided I really wanted to see some friends.

March 18 - embryos
I heard today that my best friends Edith & Jen Luli areLilly pic getting ready to flush their Louisville & Denver Grand Champion Heifer by Circle A Western Hauler to start offering embryos for sale. Should be a pretty exciting offering. click to E-mail Jenlyn Cattle for more info on the embryos.
March 23 - good Expo sales
This years Ohio Beef Expo really produced some good sales results for the Angus and most of the other breeds that participated this year. 40 Angus bulls averaged around $1,846 for the day with the two year olds selling strong above the $2,000 mark. Had "typical" Expo weather during the run, meaning it was extremely warm the first couple days and extremely cold the last two days. I got to see a lot of friends that don't I get to very often so it was a petty enjoyable time there.

Had an ice storm here Saturday morning with a decent snow arriving at daybreak. It is to warm up to 72° F (22° C) by Thursday here. I guess it is time to start getting the corn planter ready. At least those temperatures will start to put us in the mood. I'll be glad when this bleak weather gets out of here.

March 28 - I'm back, Spring storm
I've been slow with my updates this month but finally have things sorted out and grounded again so I should be making more regular ones from now on. Had our first TC Stockman 365 calf this morning. It is a nice bull out of a Rito 9J9 four year old. Had to make a run to Provico at Botkins to pick up a box of Genecol-99. We give every newborn a dose when they are born and have done so for the past 10-12 years. We haven't had a scour problem since we started using it and I'm not about to try anything different or quit giving it. My bull ear tags are still on back order and its getting crunch time with all of the bull calves I've been getting blessed with this month. We tag our bulls in purple and heifers in yellow to make pasture ID from a distance quicker.

It has been short sleeve weather since Thursday with temperatures unseasonable warm in the upper 70s° F (24°- 26°C) I got a pretty good sunburn Thursday while working cattle. Worming and vaccinations were the agenda that day. It has been very windy since it turned warm too. Today is very bad with gusts above 45 Mph (72 Kph) this morning already. There are tornado warnings and severe storm alerts sounding about every 5-10 minutes here at lunch time. The radar looks very, very nasty and I am about to yank my modem plug and head for lower floors soon.

March 29 - Indy
Knew something was wrong this morning right away. My boxer puppy, Indy, didn't meet me at the door and she always does, no matter the weather,  no matter the time, it was something that I could always count on. I found her body at the barn and then saw the blood on the road where she'd been hit sometime during the night. She was turning into such a super cattle dog and was an important daily companion to me.  I've lost three very good friends these past several weeks and now her so I'll be so glad when this month is over. Life is a journey through peaks and valleys but the terrain has just been a lot rougher than I want lately.

It's Sunny out with no wind today. We ended up with just under an inch of rain yesterday. Temperatures are staying in the high 70s° F (24°- 26°C) in the day and lows to the mid 50s° F (13°C) at night. Normal highs are only supposed to be 52° F (11°C)
