Sidey Angus Farm Diary - September 1998

September 22 - singing
Gorgeous day here!  It is only about 58º F  (14º C) and there is a nice breeze blowing. It feels like a perfect Fall day! It was 83º F  (28º C)  yesterday and that was just way too hot for late September in my mind.

We had a noisy evening here. We weaned 10 early Spring bull calves yesterday and last night they and their dams began to figure out what was going on. I am really impressed with the thickness of our Stockman 365 sons but the Tag #498 Precision and Tag #499 New Trend 315 bulls are the pick of the group. Those two are out of our best Tonto daughters and it shows.

The GAR Sleep Easy heifers are the pick of our replacements I would have to say, without a doubt!  While our New Trend 315 gals are really great, the Sleep Easy daughters just jump out. We will be putting a lot of this years girls back into the herd to build numbers and I am really pleased that we will gain a lot of quality with them.

We continue to pick ear corn onto flat wood wagons to grind our feed from. The moisture is now below 19.5% and we are deciding whether to hit the corn hard this weekend with the sheller or concentrate on soybeans. The cattle all love the fresh batches of feed made with the new corn and it is keeping well even with the hotter days this past week.

September 20 - Angus weeekend
Had an enjoyable weekend. Spent Saturday at the Way View Angus Farm Opportunity Plus Fall Sale at Hebron, Ohio which is about 130 miles East of me, near Columbus. It was a very nice sale with some excellent lots and things sold well. Was able to see some of my friends from the Eastern part of the state which is always a good time!

Today (Sunday) was the Miami Valley Angus Association picnic and Field day at Steve & Ruth Degers  farm near Lebanon, Ohio. It was about a 2 hour trip there and they are located just a few miles from the site of the 1999 Ohio Angus Preview Show.

There were about 55-60 there and the food was great! We had a potluck picnic with hamburgers and roast beef and the weather was just perfect! The house and barn there at the farm was built in 1830 and the farm is very pretty and rolling in the lay of the land
